Title: KS Tilesets made by Oft99 (FRESH UPLOADS as of September 2020!)
Post by: Oft99 on July 22, 2009, 23:53:32
Edit log:

---

I can't believe I first started this thread back in 2009 and then never edited it beyond 2011. Those were my teenaged years! As I write this it is now September 2020, I'm in my late twenties, and my country is currently entering its second national lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. With a bit of extra free time on my hands, I decided to dip back in to Knytt Stories and my old passion projects that lie therein. Out of curiosity I went to check up on this forum and what do I find? Chaos. All of the uploads of my old tilesets have decayed and disappeared. This will not do at all.

I figured it was a good enough time to just nuke the entire first post of this thread and start again...

So, uh ... hi. I'm Oft99, or at least that's my name here anyway. In any other online communities these days I'm now known as EgoNaut. Anyway: I make tilesets for Knytt Stories! ... and also levels, except none of my levels are available right now. See, in the ignorance of my youth I filled too many of my early levels with "banned" tilesets (such as the ones from A Strange Dream) so hence those uploads were rejected and taken down. Meanwhile, I had done multiple years of work on a large new level project which used original assets, but that project never reached a publishable state. The only material from that level which was ever released were its original tilesets which I uploaded here. The sample screenshots included with said tilesets were actually screenshots from my level! Maybe some day soon I might be able to release some playable version of the level on this forum? (But let's face it: probably not.)

I'm now going to provide a completely fresh set of uploads of all of my tilesets (and gradients). Many of these have been tweaked, reorganised and generally improved upon in the years since the last time any of you guys saw them. There are also some completely new ones you guys won't have seen before! Sample screenshots are provided for each.

---

All of the KS assets I've made should also be available in this Google Drive folder here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NN9pkvrMeAuyGmtH4y9wiFAj726HWDbv?usp=sharing (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NN9pkvrMeAuyGmtH4y9wiFAj726HWDbv?usp=sharing)

I'm happy for anyone to use, edit and remix any of my tilesets however they like. But no matter what you do with them, please just remember to credit me for them! Thanks.

Wow. I can't wait to use Morkesigar in the desert sections of my level! It looks great!

(Sadly it'll probably be months, at least, before I get to the desert sections. For now I'm stuck with rainy places and caves. *g*)

These are well made, and my only real complaint is that the bricks in the desert tileset are much too bright.

I sort of agree, but I won't change it because that would mean changing the colour of everything on the entire tileset to adapt to it and that would take too long.

I'm working on another new tileset as we speak, by the way.

These are neat!

Why is it called morkesigar?  :P2
No, seriously, the name sounds like it fits to the theme, and I want to know why it does so...

Like I said, the connection is kind of long-winded, not to mention uninteresting. In a several months (or maybe a few years) time if I ever make a level using a certain idea that I have in my head, you may learn what that connection is. Right now, however, it simply doesn't matter so don't feel curious about it.

That new tileset that I am making that I mentioned above is now finished, I just want to test it a little more tommorow morning before I upload it here.

I've finally finished testing that new tileset, sorry it took so long.
I've put it in the first post. Note that the second of the two screenshots shown under it is a screenshot of a level I am making with it as we speak. The first version of this level should be available on this forum quite soon, I hope!

Wow, these are Good! I like the bricks in desert temple, they don't seem too bright to me. It's too bad about your levels. :( Maybe you could make tilesets with a similar theme and the same layout to replace the ASD tilesets with?

GRIPE: Why does everyone want to use the ASD tilesets or very similar tilesets?  You obviously aren't interested in making your own tilesets, so the original content argument does not apply; therefore you really should just use the default tilesets that are, on the whole, very similar.  Pretty much the only ASD tileset that couldn't be replaced in that fashion is the temple one.

What numbers are the default tilesets that you say are so similar? Ive never noticed any resemblance.

Because if you want to make similar looking environments to ASD you have to use tilesets that are similar. (Duh)
Just because we aren't allowed to use the tilesets from ASD doesn't mean we should ban the style altogether.

I meant there are similarities between Ickle Forest and a few other tilesets made on the Nifflas Support Forum but not to any of the built-in KS tilesets.
I hope I understood your question here.

Countless people have suggested this to me and the answer is always that it would simply take too long. Of the two main levels I have made that use ASD tilesets, one is just too big and uses all but one of the ASD tilesets at some
point within it, and the other level is smaller but is composed almost entirely, every inch of it, from ASD tilesets.

Another problem is that the only imaging program I can use to make my own KS tileset effectively is MS Paint and that can't make transparant tiles for things like fog effects. It would take too long at this point to teach myself to use a better program for imaging, but one day I will (probably Flash, since I have a copy of it and I plan to learn to animate with it anyway).

I would prefeably like to keep the subject of this thread on my tilesets and other similar subjects to avoid letting things get off-topic.

I've recently started playing Knytt stories and working on my current level project again. I don't know how long it will last, you know, but you can still be sure to expect at least one new tileset from me some time soon, since I am having to make one for my level.

For some reason I've never looked into the Development Showcase threads until now, but I'm very glad to find them.

Very very nice work.  Quite the contribution to the Knytt universe, so to speak.  Great work, look forward to playing the levels made with them.

I especially like the planters in the desert level.  I've been playing with something like that myself.

At first I didn't like the newest one because it seemed redundant, but now that I look at it more closely I see that it's an interesting mix between Poisonous Forest and Not Quite Dr. Cliche's Lab, which could be quite useful, especially for people who are tired of both.

Also you seem to have broken the original posting of Ickle Forest.

I think he means that the colors are a bit too... Not smooth. Hard to say exactly how to fix it, maybe a little 'blending' but I don't know. Great tilesets by the way! I disagree on the brightness 'issue'.

Oh, and thanks by the way because that was more or less exactly the effect I was aiming for. You may also notice elements of the A Strange Dream "lab" tileset in there as well with the background pipes. This may be more apparant in the indoor sections with this tileset that you'll see in my current level project, although I'm not sure for now because I'm not quite at those sections yet.
Of course, there are my own ideas in there as well, though! That fluffy red stuff that looks like dense treetops is actually piles of waste material. This whole tileset it infact themed arround an area of forest that has become the waste disposal pit of a city that is built somewhere above it. That'll be it's purpose in my level, anyway.

Very nice.  The round-edged squares for use with the pipes is very hand and needed.  I also love the large pipe set up.  Handy!  :)  Also, (and here I'm just being anal) I like the layout with the grass to the left instead of on top.  It is a cleaner, more orderly tileset that way, imho.

The colors do seem a bit punchy to me too.  The orange red looks very "out of the tube" to use an art class term.  In other words, it feels like a clean and freshly made, manufactured color rather than a dirty, poisoned surface in an industrial waste.  I would add a dingy tone that contrasts with the orange/red, like an almost nasty green/brown.  This would give you a tarnished looked that would nicely contrast with the radioactive bright colors.  Nothing brings out a bright color like a dingy contrasting one.

The red bumps on these blocks remind me of legos.  I love legos.  :)

Red stuff is waste not plant?  I think it looks a little too much like plant then.  I never would have seen it as anything other than a plant.  Again, I think it is partially due to looking too vibrant to be a waste product.

Your idea for how you will use this sounds really cool.  Ever read Battle Angel Alita?

Thank you for this feedback! :D I might re-design the waste material and make it that dirty, dingy colour you talked about. That would make it more recognizable as waste and would bring out the bright colours too, like you said. Does that sound like a good idea? (I won't delete the old version of the tileset in the process though, it'll just be an alternate.)

And no, I haven't read Battle Angel Alita. What's it about?

EDIT: How's this? I thought I'd have your say before I release it:

That might be enough, depending on the screen, but I might either make it darker, or  I would do some mottling using a dark and light tone in a simple pattern, maybe one which hints at the junkness of the pile.  You might also make some alternate yellow and orange/red blocks which have a smear or scrape of industrial waste on them.

Well, no, I suppose there is no moral wrongness to it.  It serves the function of telling you where the ground is, like a black outline used by a bad sketch artist tells you what is foreground and background.  There is no cosmic evil to it, it just is a simple, cliche, perhaps even a boring solution that requires a lot of work to avoid.

Nifflas' style in Knytt Stories was to use black outlines, so I think the black outlines fit.

I bet you all thought I was dead, didn't you? Well I'm not and I'm back with TEN new or updated tilesets for all of you to use as you see fit.
You can find them by scrolling to the bottom this thread's first post.

I've actually had most of these up my sleeve for months, I just haven't posted them up here due to laziness.

Work on that massive level I said I was making is still under way, but it'll still be a long while before I have a playable version to upload. Sorry!
To prove to you that I am actually making a level that will be playable some day, the screenshots I've provided with the new tilesets are all screens from my level.

Critique or requests for edits are welcome.

To anyone still here: I've just nuked the entire first post of this thread and refreshed it with a new set of uploads of all of my old tilesets, as well as a few new ones.

Huge, massive thank you to the user the jack for posting here back in 2014 to re-upload my tilesets seeing as the original uploads had disappeared. I'm extremely grateful that you kept my work available for others to use at a time when I was absent. That means a lot to me, so thank you.
