Hello, I've been a lurker here for a while (looking around for good knytt stories levels.), but you have given me a reason to register:

I seem to have been trapped in your chapter two: lanterns. I just can't figure out what to do, (how to lit the lanterns.) and as you know, I can't leave the area. Have I missed something? Perhaps a powerup? (I have the two first ones.)

Otherwise a very nice level!

I have played it now and  I must say that it is stunning! The number of custom objects... over 100!!!
Some custom objects could be left out like those blue arrows, they just doesn't fit in the game and not like you don't know where to go. But it is so overwhelming, I just had to stop on some screens and look at them.

Also, in the intro it stands v.3 and in the description (you know that text under the levels name on the levels board.) And the grammar is still pretty bad. Anyway, besides all these small stupid things, you have improved one of the best levels ever.

Id like, but sendspace do not work on my computer :D  I think that is also reason, why are some pople so picky about different filehosting. Best way is to upload it on different sites.

thanks for first constuctive criticism, Iam welcoming it ! I agree that some objects are should be removed, but I hope for example arrows helps some players which are lost. To the grammar- it is old issue, however I hope there is minimum of it, case some people helped me to check and improve it. Anyway thans a lot !

Originally this level is VERY HARD difficulty, so perhpas thats the reason why you are stucked on some place. But trust me, that these beans are just matter of time and practise. Try hold jump, while jumping on it and also important thing is right timing.
Wish you good luck

I've had some trouble with those beanstalks as well because sometimes you just fall through for no reason.
Overall it's a beautiful level. I'm not done with it yet. Saw a SGE somewhere in the lantern village where some trees are overlapping the ground.
From what I've seen so far I can say good job!

I was wondering about FM1 remake, but .....
definitely not, this is my last level and project, and I already left whole KS community, this topic is the only reason why I am still here for now, and after some time, if some critical bug is not going to appear, I?ll leave forever.

The best level I played ever, sure. Very Hard parts ARE really hard. Good musics, and I like so much how you mix many objects making move in every screen.
Hope that I'll found more levels like this one. Sorry that you go, Drakkan...

sure, not problem, just credit me, but there could be small problem, that NOT all CO are mine, lots of them is used from the old forum and I do not know who original author is. So perhaps you will credit me for something what is not mine  :sigh:

This is pretty good, but (don't hurt me) I think that the level needs a distinctive styler. The beginning is realistic while the rest...isn't. :/ Other than that, nice job!

Oh, also, two questions.
1. I was looking through the wealth of KS games I have for tilesets I could use and I saw that a few tilesets you used said they were Nifflas' private tilesets. You got permission to use them, right?

2. Possible spoiler-age.

Also, I don't see why everyone thinks this level is the bes thing EVAR. It' pretty cool, but it changes styles alot, and rather quick. Like the first screen and the chimney area. The screens to the left and right of the starting screen have classic Knytt-esque tilesets and then the more realistic background. Not a fan of that. :/

Sorry for that minor rant, but other than that, it's great!

ha, first critic !
Thanks a lot for it :)
I agree that styles are changing perhaps too fast to give player opportunity to enjoy it and feel it deeper, on the other side, no area is boring, beacsue there is still something new.
Realistic / knytt tilesets and background - well thats specific for each player, my oppinion is that this mix of real background with knytt one is nice sometimes, thats all :)

Thanks again

Just finished it- it took much more than a hour! Excellent job. While it's not extraordinary, in my opinion, it was awesome to play and very fun. Sometimes I felt lost, especially near the end (I skipped the boss without doing anything weird?) but that's part of the Knytt levels, so it was all justified in the end. Generally, it was fun to play and it defiently shows the time and work you put into it.

Although I must be frank, the grammar is atrocious and whoever checked it did not do a good job.

This is one of the levels I revisit from time to time. Never get tired of it. I remember when you first released it, some of the comments were constructive both positively and negatively. Although some didn't like players names associated with the cats, I found it fun and of course gratifying to find my own.

In Drakkans defensive of poor grammar, English is not his first language but it's all totally understandable. Others are so off the mark that even though I know it's English it's very difficult to decipher. I always appreciate a good attempt at the language as it's the only one I am fluent in; as it's my mother tongue.

A few level makers post levels in their own native tongue and although playable I can't follow the story line. There have a been a couple by a French person that were totally beyond my comprehension.

Thanks to all level makers who's first language is not English but do a good job with it!

my thoughts, being the first time i actually finished this  :O

it seems like i stand alone here, but i'm not overly impressed with this. it's got good use of COs and such, but it has no flow to it. the tilesets are all over the place, going immediately from realistic to meh, and many of the scenes just look lazy and messy.
there was obviously a lot of work put into this, but it seems like that work went into how big it was (quantity over quality). and this is partly my ignorance, but i couldn't really tell when (or if) any of the tilesets were custom, as it seemed like i'd seen them all before.

now for the plus; it was very big, and there was a lot to see (i've still only seen part). it's impressive to see that just one person did this. the music was great. the challenge was just right.

still, when levels become this big (i'm looking at you, Gaia), quality becomes sacrificed for quantity. however, as this level's popularity suggests, quantity is great for many people; i guess it's just not my taste.

this level is definitely quite the achievement though.

Thanks for putting Googs response to this level from the old forum in a spoiler Purple Pineapple. It's a long treatise on a level that has obviously generated a lot of action here at the forum most of which has been positive.
I think it is good to know, that not everyone is liking your level, it is logical and I wrote everything about it in introducion spoiler at first page. Thus I am not reacting on goog criticism, because everything was said at the begining.

but have you played the latest version though? a lot of it has been redone and is a lot better.

The problems I found with the level were overall aesthetic problems more than specific level-design problems.

Mhm. I'm viguring out video editing and such on Linux so I could be a while.

Sorry for the off-topic question, but if you manage to make the video on Linux, could you please tell me which programs you're using? I've tried RecordMyDesktop for capturing, but the quality wasn't good enough (I suspect Pulseaudio and the 3D effects might be at fault); for video editing I tried Cinelerra (didn't work correctly for me) and Kdenlive (crashed regularly) some time ago.

Thanks in advance.

Once again another Drakkan level does not make the video list.

Reasons why;

- Stupid shifts.
- A load of god knows what for no reason.
- Particle Lag. Stop throwing 5 million fireflies into a scene.
- Lighting. Get some.
- Boring triangle jump filled areas that depend on luck.
- Lack of save points.
- Lack of anything to comment on its just the same stuff.
- I couldnt get passed the badly rendered grass.
- Moooooonnnnnnnnooooooooottttaaaannnnnnnnnnnyyyyy

I liked ONE THING about this level, and that was the Lantern jump at the beginning and I should actually take points away for it because you need to hold in over and skill/fun is not memorization.

Music 4/10
Tilesets 7/10 but thats not your doing.
Fun factor: 1/10.

Monontany: Yes.
Difficult: Yes.
Lack of Saves: Yes.

Ps: I expect a page long response by Drakkan defending his level. I don't give a shit about your defence, you can not defend against an opinion. Let's not start deleting my posts and open up that can of worms again. I hereby denounce that if this post is deleted its favoritism. Take your best shot.

Monontany: Yes.
Monotony is spelled M-O-N-O-T-O-N-Y.
Its roots are the words monos(one, latin) and tonos(thing, greek)

Thus, monotone, meaning one thing.

This has been Bass, the zombie from long ago who loves stating the obvious.

I just wanted to point out that 'mono' is a Greek root, not Latin (although it was also used by Romans I think).

A huge (and honest) review for a huge level! :)

I've played through to the good ending, but, I was expecting a battle, and there wasn't one, which left me a bit psyched up and unsatisfied.

I'd say the level is really a mixed bag, it has some great stuff, and some not so great stuff, IMO. I personally find realistic backgrounds cheesy (ineffective) against Knytt style graphics, and a lot of the sky textures seemed inappropriate, but these are matters of taste.

Also, Frozen Mountin herself didn't seem to play a prominent enough role for me. The game could just as easily have been called "Juni's Random Adventures".

Now, you DO have a unique tiling style, which is very collage-like and itty-bitty, and I really like that when you pull it off well. In some places, though, it just seemed like bad tiling and/or layering, creating very little depth and/or immersion. This was also the case in FM1 - the unique style is beautiful when it works, but often it doesn't, and falls flat on it's face, for me at least. In some areas there was a tad too much going on, though overall I like busy screens.

The CO usage was nice, but some of the COs felt out of place. The spinning arrows for example seemed very corny and 'multimedia 2.0', like something out of a bad Powerpoint presentation. To me Knytt is about cool and heavily stylized pixel art, and those arrows almost stand for the opposite of that. There were some other photo-realistic or generally unfitting custom objects that I didn't like, but I DID like some of the others, particularly the foliage (although again, there were layering problems here and there).

Another thing was that I was confused by my powerups disappearing and re-appearing seemingly at random sometimes - more care could have been taken to remind the player of what was going on - perhaps a cutscene or dialog sign reporting the loss. I think this happened a couple of times, but continuity isn't always smooth in this level.

On the plus side - I enjoyed a lot of the gameplay, with difficulty which was just right to be challenging, but not frustrating. I also enjoyed the sheer size and it's obvious a lot of work has gone into the level, and this helps to create immersion. The minigames were fun, and the dialog was very decent for someone whom English isn't their first language, and I felt it added to the game world. For example, the lantern part was nice because we're introduced to customs of the game world, again pulling us in. There are also a lot of areas with very immersive ambience, despite my complaints, and a lot of beautiful moments.

Like the original FM, this is a level I will come back to every now and then, so replay value is high for me. Definitely a very good level all things considered, but far from being one of the best for me (in fact, I think I preferred FM1, but that may be a nostalgia thing as it was one of the first KS levels I played). It would be nice to see you stick around, as I believe your style has yet to mature, but as it is you're going to leave a sizable legacy with these two games! Congrats :)

(Spoilers below. I don't know how to use the spoiler tags, sadly)

My first post, but I just played through this and I'll try to give a concise review.

It's fun playing a level as big as this, and you definitely deserve some credit for making it as big as it was. That alone made the level enjoyable. I would have to agree with some other members about the consistency of the level, though. If I were you in the next version I would just remove all the photo backgrounds as they badly clash with the rest of the game and, honestly, just don't look good. I can see you put a lot of effort in each screen and for the most part they look good but the tilesets are all over the place and some screens, honestly, are quite ugly.

The level design can be annoying at times. I was completely stuck once or twice (particularly when I had to find the eye). I also didn't enjoy how you "toyed" with the player by giving them a powerup for just a few screens before taking it away. I'd like to finish the game with a sense of accomplishment by earning all of the powerups before I finish it. Also, this level really, really needs a boss fight. The normal ending is ridiculously anticlimactic and sets itself up for a huge final battle when all you get is basically "The End."

The grammar is absolutely atrocious and really mars the story which isn't great. I'd be willing to fix up some of the grammar if you'd like me to but I'd really like to help fix up the story too because it's a bit of a disappointment.

All in all, it was a decent level. It was annoying and a bit of a letdown but all things considered I'd rate this a solid 7/10.

Well, some will agree with you, some not. The fact is, that Drakkan created his own, characteristic graphical style and he won't change it.

How to use spoiler tags: put text between [-spoiler-] and [/-spoiler-]. Remove -.

Hi,
thanks a lot for this nice review. Generally I agree with almost with all statet above, so just shortly to react for some:

"photos" background are very personal "feelings", somebody like it, somebody not. I definitely agree, that some of them are not so good as I wanted to be.

Level design is again very personal, if you do not like the "main" story and design I am not protesting. but I think generaly there is very few original KS levels, it is always the same: save the world, blablabla...  yes, should be better, but story is not what I was going for here.

Powerups - one of thing which should be definitely better

Boss fight - agree again. Perhpas you know there was NO boss in the first version, but I do not like it so I removed it, but I agree it should be not good for players which are excepting it.

Grammar - true true, stated few times, that I am not englihs speaking guy etc. What is interesting, that lots of players checked it, but still lots of errors :)

I see this level as the very death of the Knytt Stories community :(
This is the only level that reached full perfection, even better then the old Gaia.
This might be the very last epic-awesome-big Knytt Stories project, and i guess people will now start working with the new FiNCK.

So guys, it was some good few years, dating back from the old Deep Forest, to the great original Knytt and the golder age of Knytt Stories, two years ago.
All good things must have an end. And i guess it's Knytt Stories' time to lay down and clear the way for a new community, new levels, new epicness, a new gameplay and most impotently, a new game.

Goodbye Knytt, goodbye Jini. That was some good 3 years. We had lots of levels and lots of stories. Some a better, some are worst, but all will stay in my heart forever :)

I really hope this great community will stay here for another 3 years, but lets admit the facts: most of the old and good level creators left already, and the new one just aren't as good as them.

Well, don't take this reply too personalty. You may or may not agree with me. I'm just say what do i feel.

Drakkan,

This is seriously one of the most beautiful levels we've ever played. The sheer amount of work that went to it is enough to make it epic. Add to it amazing graphics, beautiful custom music and tilesets, and an atmosphere that ranges from fun and light to spooky and dreary, and you got it: this Knytt Story is beautiful.

In our humble opinion, the storyline would need some improvement, but you can't have everything... And our biggest problem is that we're stuck!  :P2, to the point where:

Hey, I really love this level. It's definitely my favorite. I was just wondering, I saw a boss-fight type area in the Level Editor, but I can't figure out how to get to it after grabbing the two jump upgrades at the end and getting the normal ending. Can you give me a hint?

Also, did you compose the boss-fight song? It's really good.

I thougth the level was fun. I don't have too much to complain about, althought the spikes did kinda give me a hard time sometimes.

And... I don't know if anyone else has noticed, and sorry if I am just posting dsomething obvious, but I noticed there is one tree with a couple tiles placed off. I just wanted to share... Mostly because I'm usually the last to find out about an error and I kinda was excited I didn't see any posting regarding this error. Then again I am most likely mistaken...

Hello. Thanks for you message. Boss fight is not avivable in this version as I have decided for it, because I do not liked the fight, it was too "stupid".
I wanted to remake it, but actually never get to it. So yeah, Boss fight is avivable only trough editor now :)

Thanks Zackarii. The "bug" you are talking about is actually not wrong,a ltough it seems that way. It is originally used tileset from somebody and it mentioned to seem like this :) I agree it looks like it is "placed off"

Not really a bug. Ijust don't know how to describe it. Not to criticize or anything but I just thought it would work if the tiles were put 1 space to the right.

version 4 is out :)  you need KS EX for it, as it is providing some fantastic stuffs like moving light or rising water which I really love !
see two new screens just for inspiration to play this level again ;)

Please be aware I didnt have enough time / mood to proper testing everything, so some bug should occur, in that case let me know.

I was just roaming around after a year and I have decided to re-upload the level and refresh the links. I have add some small changes, like new CO´s and some minor graphical updates, bugs correct, more grammar check, new scenes picture etc. Because it is just minor, it is version 4.0b (altough officialy it is still 4.0)
So if you do not have played this level yet and you like KS, you have fine opportunity now. Enjoy and of course I will welcome any comments (will pick them after a year or so... ;)
Have fun, see you

Secrets are released, meow !

Few extra cats to be discovered, including mine, which location is unknown ;)
1. Nifflas cat, Lunatic corner jump !

some inetresting facts:
- there is several Eyes and detectors trough the level
- the "Isnoct" secret is told during Lanterning chpater, if you are checking all the knytts / cats
- there is bug which will cause game not finishable (you can get stuck in case you reveal Isnoct secret and you do not have key from the tower climbing)
- there is about 5 secret shortcuts in the pyramid, so whole pyramid could be finished during few minutes, but I am too lazy to describe them as for now...

Made an account just to let you know how much I enjoyed and appreciated this level. From the very starting screen I was absorbed by the game and the scenery and the music. There were several places, like the starting area and the return to the frozen mountain area, where I just stopped and listened to the music and enjoyed the simple and compelling beauty of this game. Thank you for making this, it's likely a game that I'll hold dear to my heart for a long time.

You need to install the Knytt Stories Ex (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=4253) mod to see the special platforms in that room. IIRC KS+ and KS Ex can be installed at the same time in the same folder. It's worth it just for this level ;).

@Drakkan: If you ever re-upload this level you should change the format to 3. KS will tell people to get a newer version and KS+ will tell people to get KS Ex.

thanks for these. I will check what I can do about the heaven area, I was realizing this could be quite messy as there are lots of possible problems. 6) you are missing KS+, there are new grey platforms in this room. Dunno how you was able to make chicken hunt challenge ?

I just didn't see them because they blend with the background. I also didn't see them in my editor, because level format isn't set to KS+ (and I happened to have KS Ex set of objects chosen). To set format, set Format=4, rename Info.png into Info+.png and add Info.png with text that would inform how to install KS+ if the level is selected in another version.

This is an amazing level, but towards the end problems with challenge design spoiled a big part of the fun.
Linear structure of the level (with the exception of the starting area) and inability to go back (despite what's incorrectly said at x1027y1001) don't facilitate collecting golden creatures well.
Could you upload the last version made for KS Ex too? I'd like to play it with a ball too.
