Title: [challenge/normal/medium]Shipwrecked Full Version
Post by: egomassive on May 05, 2010, 11:41:39
As the title suggests, our heroine finds herself shipwrecked on a tropical island. You can follow Juni through her day to day struggle to survive, be rescued, and solve the mystery behind the disaster that cast her away.

The game plays in episodes much like Farik's Harvest (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/Farik%20-%20Harvest.knytt.bin). I was originally going for an environmental level, but I decided there were too many objectives for the environment label. So, I added some tricky jumps and monsters. The game is normal difficulty, but the 2 hidden bonus endings are almost very hard.

Features Include:
All custom tilesets
All custom music (I'm mostly just using ambiance though)
Mostly custom ambiance
Animated custom objects (e.g. In screen shots below; Juni, crab, and fire are animated.)
In game cutscenes including animations
An intriguing story line
3 endings (2 are hidden and very hard difficulty)

I'm rating this PG for mild language and cartoon violence.

This was made for a forum competition. It was originally released in beta form to meet the competition deadline. If you played the beta and liked it, then you should definitely play this. There are small to large changes throughout the game. The biggest changes are the addition 2 bonus endings and a fully realized story. Unfortunately it still has the same lame cutscene drawings, because I don't like making them. However, there are plenty of new drawings intentionally made to look as bad as the old ones. :) If you've never played this level in any form, ignore what I just said. Everything is awesome.

I was so intrigued and captivated by the level that I did not look for voids, sges or other errors.

In my opinion this level is, by far, the best combination of story and gameplay I've ever played. Well, I won't be so brazen to put it above Nifflas but...

Other levels have had equal or maybe even better story line quality but the gameplay was not as interesting, fun or possibly too difficult.

Some levels have had equal quality in gameplay or better as far as difficulty or perhaps they were more challenging.

This one though, just seems to have the right mix of everything.

Excellent. A+ for you.

Wow, thank you lamarblake! That's quite a compliment. My goal is to someday make a level that does surpass those of Nifflas. Probably not possible since his levels define the term 'Knytt-like'.

@bulbapuck: I never tried that. Thanks for catching it so quickly. It's transparent to the player, but there happen to be 6 different ways to leave that room. It was a simple copy/paste error. I copied the code, but I didn't change the screen address.

Alright, I've finally found some time to finish playing.

Absolutly stunning level man! The cutscenes were insane, and the entire level was absolutely beautiful C)p Can't wait for the full version to come out.

I'm going to study how you made this level to try and make levels like these myself C)

@peppyhare4000: how? I tried for quite some time to do it, but failed... Did you jump over the spider twice and then chase him back?
Title: Re: [challenge/normal/medium]Shipwrecked Beta
Post by: egomassive on May 06, 2010, 00:24:19
@ Dataflashabot: Yes. Those are the strong words I was referring to. Maybe I should have said, "mild language."

@ Grimwit: I put the warp code for left and right instead of left and down. Woops.

@PeppyHare4000: When I made that screen I thought, "If anyone manages to get past this I'll be impressed." Well, I'm impressed. What bulbapuck describes is an effective method at fooling the spider. I'll have to add 'something' there.

@bulbapuck: I did make an effort to cite my code in the world.ini this time. I didn't explain why I did things but I did mark which code goes with which section of the game as I'm sure you're already aware. One of the main tricks I use is to set a flag representing multiple achievements. Hypothetically, you find Item-2, then Flag-2 is turned on and the game checks for Flag-1. If Flag-1 is true then Flag-3 is turned on as well. The same thing happens at Item-1. Later, if I want to know which items you have I check Flag-3, then Flag-2, and then Flag-1. I'll list what all the flags represent for you in the world.ini next update.

My method on completing the impossible screen.
I climb the wall and let go then run to the opposite end right before the spider makes it to the right end. Afterwards, I climb the wall at the left end then jump down and back up to make him go right again then i make it to the void.

Suggestion to make it impossible to pass: Put purple spiders on both ends.

By the way, This was a great game overall. I like how
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

I just might use the Beach and the Cave tileset for my upcoming project (If its okay with paul)

It had a good storyline and good enviroment. I do like a good lunatic level though. Good job, Kudos to you.

Ah, I've just one. That was amazing. I did note a few minor spelling errors though, most noticeably "gaurds" rather the "guards".

But 'tis but a minor quibble. It was a fantastically fun little level. The tilesets are awesome, and that little flamenco guitar tune that plays while you're sneaking around Solid Snake style is gonna be stuck in my head a while, I think. >_>

Oh, on that note, the environmental sounds were also really excellent.

The spiders automatically run to the right to start, so one on each side wouldn't do any good. :P

The shiftwork is absolutely astounding here, as is, well, everything else. I loved the environment, the sounds and the music, the gameplay, the plot... Juni the character was well-written, too! I also liked the visuals very much this time; the visuals were something I wasn't quite at home with in A Knytt in Time, but here every screen looks splendid. I'll be waiting eagerly for the final version, and I hope that the large level you were working on will be released eventually.

Version 0.4 for is available as an update. It's a small file that only includes the parts that have been changed since version 0.2. Just install normally and choose overwrite when prompted. It worked for me when I tested it.

@Yohji: I'm afraid to break this to you, but the massive level I'm working on looks more like A Knytt in Time than Shipwrecked. You can see some screen shots here (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2876.0). Oh, and I'm still taking musicians. So far, I think Razorman is the only one working on anything. Back on topic, Shipwrecked looks the way it does because the chief rule of the competition was to use a tileset made by Paul 'Ripen' Naumowicz on every screen. Since I used in game cutscenes, his tiles appear in them too.

@Teper: The problem with in game cutscenes is that the objects appear on screen briefly after you shift to a screen. That means the CO's I used to cover Juni reveal her for a moment. The game wasn't designed to play cutscenes this way. It's essentially a hack, and as with most hacks it doesn't work all that well. I briefly considered making the night scene darker. I decided it was fine the way it was.

Teper, you also hit on a point I haven't brought up yet. One of the reasons I decided to make this quick level is to strengthen the Kyntt Stories community. I'm working on my masterpiece, due end of this year/beginning of next. I want there to be a thriving community here to play it when it finally lurches into view.

I finally found some time to play this level (been a little busy with RL matters and my own new level). Now I can say it's definitely worth the praise :)  Very interesting theme, very clever use of shifts to make animated scripted cutscenes, nice challenges, good music/ambience and great use of the tileset. A bit short, but very enjoyable.

It's also very polished, considering the level's complexity and the fact it's been rushed to completion. I only ran into a wall-swim once, but fixed it quickly just by pressing CTRL+R:

Spoiler: Wall-swim (click to show/hide)

I don't really have any complaints. They only thing that disappointed me a little was the duration... but then again, you did fantastic considering the time restrictions you had to work under. Great job, egomassive. Looking forward to the final version, can't wait to play it again and get the alternate endings :D

Egomassive, are you going to categorize the ambiance files in this level? I would like to use the animal sounds one, but I'm not sure which one it is.
Title: Re: [challenge/normal/medium]Shipwrecked Beta
Post by: egomassive on May 11, 2010, 01:48:30
@Healy: In the last update I added a lot of notes in the world.ini. They mostly describe what all of the flags are used for on each day. Up at the top of the ini I listed the names of all the ambiance tracks. The "animal sounds" tracks are called Jungle and Jungle Light. They are Ambi33.ogg and Ambi34.ogg respectively. Jungle Light is intended to be heard on approach to the Jungle.

@Feline Monstrosity: Well, I fixed all the glitches found by the community in the last update. But, I discovered that I added one. I streamlined the logic behind day 3, and left behind a wall of shift objects I'm not using anymore. If you play it now it shouldn't ruin it for you later. You will want to play the full version when it comes out. At about 20 minutes of playtime that's not a big deal.

@theiza27: Harvest is one of my favorites.

Spoiler: impossible screen (click to show/hide)

I'm completely snowed under with RL work at the moment, have been for a couple of months or so, but today I came back from a work meeting and was too exhausted to do even more work at home. So I played a bit of KS instead - for the first time in weeks. One level I played today (or rather, finished today - I'd started it a while ago) was this one. It is completely lovely, and I can't wait for the full version! Great work, egomassive!

Yikes! Over a month since my last update. I had worked on this so intensely for the competition that I got tired of messing with it. The level is nearly finished. All I really have to do is draw the cutscene gradients and make a handful of custom objects. Drawing cutscenes is my least favorite part.

When I'm ready to release, I'm going to revive the preview thread and ask for beta testers. I don't know when that will be. The infamous level killer, RL, is stalking me.

The full version has been beta tested and is now released! Get it in the top post.

For those who have played the beta, this version includes 2 new bonus endings, an extended normal ending, and a smattering of new content throughout. Though the level is normal, the path leading to the 2 bonus endings is almost very hard. For those interest in level designing, I have fully documented the world.ini. I've done everything I can to ensure there aren't any bugs in this version. If you find any please post them here. Thank you.

Sadly, my website is under construction. There won't be a walkthrough until I get the website in order. If you have any questions about the game play, ask them here and I will try to answer them. If you have questions or comments about the story, please use spoiler tags. I am not going to answer questions about plot elements. I don't want to ruin the mystery. You are free to speculate among yourselves. :)

@ Gorfinhofin: 7 Days a Skeptic, is that the one in space? I'm sure I played it. Never played Lovecraft. Neither of them influenced this game. The music choices came from the fact that most of the game uses ambiance only. I wanted something natural sounding. Both tracks use a single acoustic instruments, drums or guitar. The Spanish guitar choice was influenced by, if anything, my love for The Doors. The tribal drum track was then added to make the other track feel more natural. I felt that if the player didn't hear music until the end of the game, the music would jolt them. I had to have music in the castle though, because wind and fire didn't fill the sound-scape enough. The caves had the same problem, so it was natural to add music there too.

@StraightFlame: I blatantly omitted that. I have too much self-esteem, and I try not too do anything that could be construed as bragging.

And he's the inspiration for such great levels as The Outsider and It Waits (which was so inspiring to me I made a LittleBigPlanet loosely based on it).

Oh, that Lovecraft. I read "a Lovecraft story" like "A Lovecraft Story." I need to read more carefully I guess. I didn't believe it, so I had to look it up. 7 Days a Skeptic does use the same music. It's a piano midi version and it sounds terrible, but it's hard to beat a 27k file size.

Hurray! My work has been YouTubed! To me, that's as good as receiving a hidden star. Genius is a bit over the top, but thanks for saying.

I checked my statistics today and discovered that auntie pixelante (http://www.auntiepixelante.com/?p=578) gave me a short but positive review. There's a lot of interesting game making discussion there for those who are interested.

maybe later, when i'm energized and concentrated (e.g. caffeinated) enough, i'll record a video of getting to the bonus bonus ending without dying too many times. screen with spikes over mushrooms is the obvious bottleneck.

I LOVED this level. It has a great concept and gameplay. I hope to see you next levels. ;)

man, this was so cool, and I never noticed this until now! :/ :D
although I have no idea where either of the secret endings could be...
but the "lame" cutscene style made me laugh a lot, I think it's awesome. :]

That reminds me, I need to make a walkthrough. All the endings depend on the last day which is why you have the option to restart the last day.

And yet, it's a step I somehow avoided...?

True, it's an unnecessary step. It's a very helpful one though.

I'm trying this level now, but I think I just found a bug. (Version 1.0)
On the second day, when Juni needs to gather wood, I overloked the very first piece, so I kept on going. When she said she only needed one more, I went back and got that one and she said that again - just one more. Now I can't find more wood but it won't let me start the fire. (I already have the magnesium, but it still says I need more wood.)
You should definitely fix this, as I was really enjoying the level and this little problem is a pitty. :)

EDIT: Yep, it's a glitch. I just replayed it collecting the same pieces of wood, this time on the correct order and it worked.

^: Sorry about that. You're supposed to be able to find the objects in any order which means there are 120 different ways to do it. I haven't tried them all. There are 48 ways to pick up the wood near the beach after all the other wood. Can you tell me the exact order you picked up all the items? I'll sift through the code in the meantime.

I just tried doing it like the first time and I couldn't reproduce the bug. Sorry. =(
I think the order I did was:

1. Magnesium
2. On a platform after exiting the cave
3. On the way back, up high
4. The leftmost piece, after the purple enemy
5. The first piece, after the beach

Anyway, I beat the level with both endings and I must say I loved it. Amazing work there. It's noticeable that you put quite a lot of work on to it.

^: I figured out what happened. You were moving when you picked up the 3rd piece. There's a shift on the target screen that turns on a flag and auto-saves the game. It was a spot shift which can be missed if Juni is running while teleporting. Now it's a square shift. This should prevent anyone else from experiencing an uncompletable game. Thanks for finding this PONTO!

I am quite RIDICULOUSLY proud to say that I beat the room with the slime, the spike guy and the mushrooms (x992y1070) on my FIRST TRY.  I made it from day 5 to the bonus bonus ending in 34 deaths. As ortoslon doesn't have a working video of it (they always make me look bad <_<), I am now officially smug 8).

This may or may not have been my third playthrough of the lunatic area.

egomassive, this level was excellent. I got all the possible endings and all the hidden content today, and enjoyed myself throughout, despite repetitive strain injury. In my view you are the second-best level designer out there (even Shipwrecked does not beat I Dreamed of the Sky) and TToK has a strong chance of making you the best, as well as the most important non-Nifflas contributor to the KS community. Congratulations, you're amazing!

Do you realize that I Dreamed of the Sky uses an ambiance loop I created for this level? :O ... I just wanted to point that out. :P ... Seriously though, I've yet to dethrone Nifflas as top KS designer. Heck, I haven't even surpassed Farik. But, if I don't get my act together and finish TTok, Talps or Plural may take the crown first.

No, I didn't realise that.

I have a truly marvelous response to this comment which this morning is too small to contain. You may or may not see it later, depending upon the status of my repetitive strain injury. Four solid days of KS does that to you.

So sorry, I guess I am now officially the gravedigger of the group.
But for a reason.
I have found out that Shipwrecked, which is one of my favourite levels of all times, has been reuploaded recently on the Levels Archive, around 9 days ago, along with the Dying Core.
So I thought: what better occasion to ask Egomassive (hi, nice to meet you) if there's anything new in these two levels.
Also if I'm not rude, is there any news about tToK or other projects of yours? Your works are among the most well executed one can find (the flag 2 checking for flag 1 toggling flag 3 if both are true is...how to put it...very notable and enjoyable).
Thank you and again, I'm really sorry for grave digging. If there was a place on the forum where I could talk about very old levels, I would very much be pleased to post there. There isn't one, and I found no other way to talk about this. Besides, fewer people would check a separate forum section so in a way, I am happy there isn't one. So please bear with me. Thanks.

I have found out that Shipwrecked, which is one of my favourite levels of all times, has been reuploaded recently on the Levels Archive, around 9 days ago, along with the Dying Core.

You may have noticed that it appeared at the same time as 130 other old levels. They appear roughly in alphabetical order and have all been released previously, but outside of knyttlevels.com. Some, like The Machine, don't really have a reason to be on the site at all. We've been speculating about it on the Nifflas Discord server (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6909.0) and concluded that they were probably all uploaded by an unknown third party and have not been updated by the original authors. In some cases, like Frozen Mountain 2, it doesn't even appear that the latest version of the level was uploaded. Hope this helps!

Really old thread, I know. But I gotta ask:
I got the normal ending and the
bonus ending (cracking open a cold one, you know. I have no idea how to use spoiler tags by the way).

How do you get the second bonus ending?
